LIST PICK

MILLIE TURNER JANUARY

Indie pop wunderkind Millie Turner continues to prove herself as one to watch and not let out of your sight with ‘January’. Following noteworthy List Picks ‘Underwater’ and ‘Night Running’, the Hackney local has released her second EP, Hide+Seek, featuring our favourite new track ‘January’. Building on the alt-dance rhythms we’ve heard in previous songs, Turner injects a funky discotheque flavour into this melodious bop. Her vocals are ripe and full of reflection, as she brings together club culture, technology and nostalgia into her blissfully simple analogies. Speaking of the track, MT says: “January represents an idea for me, a time where there’s this internal pressure to do more, be more, start again, relive your life, forget that you’re human. In reality I’m a mess and make mistakes all the time and this song is a parody for the reality that “January” brings. Take me to January, where I can make more mistakes and live like a normal human growing and self improving in my own way. In the meantime I will spill the milk.” This song stands up as the opener to Hide+Seek EP, which leads into six more gorgeous tracks that explore the songwriter’s identity in relation to the world as she sees it. - Hannah Thacker
